GLP-1: Does It Cause Muscle Loss?
Drugs such as Wegovy, Ozempic and Zepbound.
How do they work?
GLP-1 agonists facilitate weight loss by stimulating insulin secretion, delaying the emptying of the stomach contents, and reducing hunger.
Before we dive any deeper...Muscle loss, because of weight reduction in individuals with overweight or obesity, is a normal phenomenon.
Proportion of Lean Mass Loss: Research suggests that lean mass loss constitutes approximately 25% to 40% of the total weight reduction achieved through GLP-1 RA treatment. This proportion is comparable to that observed with other weight loss interventions.
Excessive loss of muscle mass can lead to physical frailty, decreased mobility, and other health complications, particularly in older adults.
How to Preserve Lean Muscle Mass
- Resistance Training: Engaging in regular strength training exercises can help preserve and potentially increase muscle mass during weight loss.
- Consuming a protein-rich diet supports muscle maintenance and repair, which is essential during periods of weight reduction.
- In the Journal of the Endocrine Society, consuming twice the RDA (recommended daily allowance) of protein per day preserved muscle during weight loss with GLP-1.
- The recommended RDA currently is 0.8g per kg. About 70 grams of protein per day for a 200lb person. So, doubting that means a 200lb person should be getting about 140 grams of protein per day while on a GLP-1.
- Carla Prodo, PhD suggests to her patients that they target 20-40 grams of protein per day. As an example, a 4-ounce chicken breast has about 35 grams of protein.
- Anila Chadha, MD recommends to her patients 30 grams of protein per meal and emphasizes focus on protein and veggies.
