Battle of the Pumps | Nitrates vs. Citrulline for Nitric Oxide
Nitrates and Citrulline are both effective for enhancing nitric oxide (NO) production, but they work through different pathways and have unique benefits.
Conversions
Citrulline
Citrulline is converted into arginine in the kidneys, which then increases nitric oxide production via the arginine-NO synthase pathway.
Nitrates
Nitrates > Nitrites > Convert to Nitric Oxide (This process is independent of the arginine pathway).
Time to Pumps
Citrulline has a slower onset as it takes time to convert into arginine and build Nitric Oxide levels. Requires consistent supplementation to maximize benefits.
Nitrates tend to have a relatively quick effect and are best for immediate improvements in blood flow and pumps.
Other benefits
While Citrulline has been shown to provide better pumps longer, Nitrates also increase pumps quicker but also provide better endurance.
Which is Better for You?
Choose Nitrates If:
- You want quick, powerful pumps for your workout.
- You're focusing on endurance or high-cardio sessions.
Choose Citrulline If:
- You want a sustained pump and longer-term performance benefits.
- You're doing strength training or high-intensity, anaerobic workouts.
Recommended Nitrates
- iForce Nutrition Potassium Nitrate
- Beet Root Powder
Using both supplements together can amplify their effects, providing both immediate pumps (nitrates) and long-lasting endurance (citrulline). This combination is common in advanced pre-workout formulations.
