Online Transaction Safety
Everything you need to know about shopping safely online- here at My Supplement Store or anywhere you shop online!
Note: Did you know that most telephone orders from Fortune 500 Companies are actually entered over the internet? That's right, when you call some Fortune 500 Company (a billion $$ plus company) in the retail industry and give your credit card over the phone that info is processed over the same internet you are on right now. Most companies use call centers that are thousands of miles away from their main office- this means that all that info you just gave to the friendly customer service rep is now being transmitted just as if you had placed an order on their own web-site. So, whether you place the order yourself or have someone else place that order you are still doing business online.
Note: What about when I buy something from a physical store (AKA- a brick & mortar store)? When you go into a store and buy something they swipe your card through that little machine and we don't think much of it. However, that little machine is just a computer that is connecting to the internet to charge your card. Once again you are shopping online!

Look for SSL Use
- Many online transactions are now protected by what's called SSL, which is short for Secure Sockets Layer.
- SSL provides you with sound privacy protection by encrypting the channel of communication between you and the consumer. Using a mathematical formula, SSL puts the information you exchange into a complex code. Think of it as a kind of armor over the information. Even if intercepted, your data would be extremely difficult to read.
- In plain English, SSL helps the consumer's browser automatically scramble his informationsuch as a credit card numberbefore it gets sent to the merchant. After that, SSL allows only the merchant's software to unscramble this data. Through SSL, you and your customers can complete transactions with the confidence that no one else can read, change, or fool with their payment information as it travels over the Internet.
- Since the data sent is secure, SSL is now considered more than enough security for consumers to do business with merchants they know and trust.
- To find out if your transaction is guarded by SSL, look for the picture of the unbroken key or closed lock in your browser window (both the Netscape Navigator/Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers use SSL). Either indicator means SSL is hard at work. (If you don't see either one, or if you see a broken key or an open lock, that means SSL is definitely not hard at work protecting your transaction.)
- The easy way you can tell if SSL is guarding your transaction, though, is to check the URL of the site you are visiting. It should change from "http" to "https" when processing secure transactions.
Am I liable if there are charges that I didn't authorize on my credit card?
Most credit card companies have toll-free numbers and 24-hour service to deal with these emergencies -- they are eager to avoid credit card fraud. (Below is an up to date list of Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card and American Express Card's personal security statements and info about what to do if you have unauthorized activity on your card.
According to US law, (this law works whether you are buying vitamins or a new house with your credit card) Once you have reported the loss or theft of your credit card, you have no more responsibility for unauthorized charges. Further, your maximum liability under federal US law is $50 per credit card -- and most credit card issuers will even waive that fee for good customers (see below list).
In plain English that means that if you see a charge on your card that you don't recognize then all you have to do is call your credit card company and inform them of the problem and they will issue a reversal immediately. You aren't liable for that charge anymore! So shopping online is very safe... but if the unthinkable happens you still aren't out any money!
